Egypt is strengthening its national accreditation system as part of a broader strategy to improve industrial competitiveness, expand exports and attract investment, Industry Minister Khaled Hashem said.

Speaking at Egypt’s celebration marking the World Accreditation Day on Tuesday, Hashem said accreditation plays a central role in improving product and service quality, building confidence among consumers and international markets, as well as facilitating Egyptian exports.

He stressed that global competitiveness now depends not only on manufacturing efficiency but also on a robust quality and conformity assessment system.

The minister said the government’s updated industrial strategy prioritises seven key manufacturing sectors while promoting circular economy principles, recycling and sustainable production to help integrate Egyptian industries into global supply chains.

Hashem noted that the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) currently operates across 13 accreditation fields with international recognition, helping ensure the credibility of testing laboratories and certification bodies. The Ministry of Industry’s General Organisation for Standardisation and Quality also operates 15 accredited laboratories to strengthen the country’s quality infrastructure.

The EGAC is finalising cooperation agreements with Germany’s DAkkS and Belgium’s BELAC accreditation bodies. The partnerships are expected to help Egyptian exporters meet the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requirements by enabling internationally recognised carbon emissions verification, supporting Egyptian products’ access to European markets.
