ADDIS ABABA – The Egyptian embassy in Addis Ababa on Wednesday called on the members of the Egyptian community to take the utmost care and caution in light of the circumstances in Ethiopia as the Ethiopian government imposed a state of emergency across the country on Tuesday.
On its social media accounts, the embassy urged the Egyptian community to adhere to local procedures and instructions and to limit their movements and that of their families as well as stay away from gathering places or heading to remote areas.
Ethiopia declared a six-month state of emergency on Tuesday after forces from the northern region of Tigray said they were gaining territory and considering marching on the capital Addis Ababa.
The announcement came two days after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged citizens to take up arms to defend themselves against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Earlier on Tuesday, authorities in Addis Ababa told residents to register their arms and prepare to defend their neighbourhoods.
