CAIRO – Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar announced that Egypt has joined the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), becoming the 29th state joining the agency.
The minister pointed out on Thursday that such a step reflects the agency’s recognition of Egypt’s great efforts on cancer research and prevention.
The minister also highlighted fruitful presidential heath initiatives adopted by Egypt to contribute to helping treat cancer-linked diseases.
“Egypt’s membership in IARC marks a significant step towards strengthening global efforts in cancer research and prevention,” says IARC Director Dr Elisabete Weiderpass.
“We are excited to collaborate with Egypt on crucial initiatives such as cancer registration, epidemiology, and prevention research, leveraging our combined expertise to advance cancer control and improve public health outcomes,” Weiderpass added.
The IARC is part of the World Health Organisation. Its mission is to coordinate and conduct research on the causes of human cancer, the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and to develop scientific strategies for cancer control.
The agency is involved in both epidemiological and laboratory research and disseminates scientific information through publications, meetings, courses, and fellowships.
