QENA – Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa opened Saturday Mar Girgis (Saint George) Monastery, the complex, and the Monastery of Anba Basantaous in the city of Hager Naqada in Qena, Upper Egypt, after restoration.
Governor of Qena Ashraf al Dawoudi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri, Head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities Osama Talaat, and Anba Biyan Bishop of Naqada and Qus attended the opening ceremony, along with a host of senior officials from the governorate and state bodies concerned.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Issa reiterated the ministry’s commitment to upholding its role in preserving Egyptian heritage through its renovation and restoration projects that covered museums and archaeological sites nationwide.
The ministry seeks to create a better tourism experiment as part of a national strategy for tourism development, while working for accommodating inbound tourism growth during the winter season, the minister said, hailing the fruitful cooperation between the ministry’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, Qena Governorate, the Coptic Church, and the Diocese of Naqada and Qus.
