The latest efforts under the 100 Million Trees initiative came under review on Tuesday.
Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) reviewed the progress of the presidential initiative.
Last October work began on planting 100 million trees in 9,900 sites with total area of 6600 acres suitable for forestation, plus a series of nurseries to supply saplings, the minister said.
It is hoped that 1 million trees will be planted within the first year of the 7-year scheme, the minister added.
Such is the importance of the initiative in doubling per capita share of green space nationwide, in improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, deriving the maximum economic benefit from the trees and improving public health.
According to an official report, 750,000 trees and have been planted so far across the country.
The initiative also aims to mitigate the impact of climate change, Fouad said.
Meanwhile, efforts are being stepped up to counter climate change with the launch of the 2050 National Climate Change Strategy to promote the use of renewable energy produced from waste and alternative energy forms such as green hydrogen.
Many projects have been devised to exploit renewables to upgrade transport services and farmers are encouraged to adopt new technologies to address the effects of climate change on crop yields.
