Egypt stepping up efforts to ensure stability in Libya

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi affirmed on Tuesday that Egypt will continue to coordinate with all Libyan brothers in the coming period in order to ensure the unity and cohesion of Libyan national institutions, leading to holding the key parliamentary and presidential elections by the end of this year as well as preventing foreign interventions.

 

The president’s remarks came during his meeting with Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh and Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar in the presence of Head of the General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.

 

During the meeting, President Sisi discussed the latest developments in Libya in light of the special relations between the two countries as well as the well-established Egyptian policy considering Libya’s stability on the political and security levels as part of Egypt’s stability.

 

The president also praised the constant keenness of the Libyan leaders to implement the will of the brotherly Libyan people and preserve their national interests, with the aim of restoring security and stability in Libya as well as preserving the sovereignty and unity of the Libyan state.

 

For their part, the two Libyan officials expressed their appreciation for the leading Egyptian role and tireless and sincere efforts to support Libya since the outbreak of the crisis until now.

 

The Libyan officials added that this comes as part of the extended and fraternal relations between the two countries and peoples. They also expressed their deep appreciation to President Sisi and the Egyptian people for standing by their Libyan brothers in managing the transitional phase and supporting them in shouldering the historical responsibility entrusted to them.

 

They also referred to Egypt’s contribution to the unification of the Libyan National Army as well as its vital role in transferring the Egyptian development experience to Libya and helping it to benefit from the experience and capabilities of the Egyptian companies in this regard.

 

The Libyan leaders also confirmed the consistency of their positions with the Egyptian perspective on managing the Libyan transitional phase, especially with regard to the need to ensure holding presidential and parliamentary elections before the end of this year in parallel with strengthening the security track by through the removal of mercenaries from Libyan territory.
