Transport Minister, Kamel el-Wazir, and Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) Yehia Zaki, made an inspection tour of the ongoing construction and development works at the Sokhna Port Sunday.

The tour included various projects at the port, among which the 12 km long platforms with a depth of 18 metres, handling yards covering a total area of 5.6 million square metres, and trade and logistics areas of 5.3 square kilometres.

During the tour, Minister el-Wazir gave orders to set up a 10 km long railway network inside the port as part of the ongoing development works. This will be later connected to the giant Sokhna– el-Alamein high-speed train project.

Up to 42 Egyptian companies are carrying out works at the Sokhna Port, under national consultant supervision.

Minister el-Wazir gave orders that all the construction and development works, worth LE20 billion, be achieved over the coming two years, to coincide with the completion of the high-speed line Ain Sokhna– el-Alamein.

Once completed, the Sokhna Port will be the most pivotal in the Red Sea, serving trade between Southeast Asia and Western Europe, as well as North Africa, he said.

Egypt has an overall view of promoting national ports and organising the maritime transport market, aiming to create of the country a hub of transit trade, Minister El-Wazir noted.
