By Mohamed Attia

Egypt and Oman have formally agreed to enhance their co-operation in the civil aviation sector, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding operating rights for their respective national airlines and bolstering regional integration efforts.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the 42nd Session of the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada.

The MoU was executed by Pilot Amr el-Sharkawy, Chairman of the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, and Engineer Nayef bin Ali Al-Abri, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Sultanate of Oman.

This agreement reflects the profound historical ties between Egypt and the Sultanate and underscores both nations’ commitment to developing their bilateral civil aviation co-operation.

Its objective is to ensure the sector keeps pace with global changes, supports regional integration, and contributes to the establishment of a more efficient and sustainable air transport industry.

Pilot Amr el-Sharkawy characterised the signing as a significant stride toward strengthening Arab co-operation within civil aviation.

He affirmed Egypt’s continuous pursuit of expanding its regional and international partnerships and providing comprehensive support to its national carriers, ultimately serving the interests of travelers and stimulating air traffic between the two nations.

In response, Engineer Nayef bin Ali Al-Abri expressed his pride in the collaboration, emphasising that co-operation with Egypt delivers significant value to Oman’s civil aviation sector.

He noted that the MoU will “open new horizons for coordination and exchange of expertise,” enhance aviation safety and sustainability, and serve to stimulate air traffic, particularly to Egyptian tourist destinations.

Both officials concluded their discussions by highlighting the memorandum as a model of fruitful and constructive cooperation, poised to strengthen bilateral relations and support the broader Sustainable Development Goals for the air transport industry across the region.
