Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Tarek el Molla said Tuesday that converting petrol-powered vehicles to run on Compressed natural gas (CNG) saved more than one million tons of liquid fuels in the past year.

The average monthly sales of natural gas as fuel for cars rose to about 95 million cubic meters in 2022, a matter that saved about 88,000 tons of liquid fuels (gasoline and diesel) per month as a result of replacing it with natural gas, which means more than one million tons annually, compared to nearly 46 million cubic meters of average monthly gas sales in 2019, which saved 37,000 tons of liquid fuels.

This came during a meeting to follow up on a plan to expand the use of natural gas as a fuel for cars, the minister said that the unprecedented projects during that period to add natural gas fueling stations and conversion centers made a quantum leap in the use of natural gas as fuel for cars in the local market.

The minister also directed his ministry’s officials to work on converting gasoline-powered cars to run on natural gas to 100,000 vehicles during the current year.
