Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said Wednesday there were presidential directives during talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) not to impose any financial burdens on citizens.
In weekly press statements. Madbouli added: “The economic reform program that the state set and agreed upon with the IMF two years ago was implemented under conditions different from the current ones.”
“President Abdel Fattah El Sisi directed the government to review the program’s targets and timing in light of the new developments that occurred, Madbouli said, making clear that this was the focused talks during the visit of the Director of the IMF.
Madbouli stressed that during the main discussion with the IMF president, an agreement was reached that no new decisions would be taken that would add any additional financial burdens on citizens in light of the current circumstances.
There was an understanding from the IMF of the matter, he clarified.
The review committee began their work yesterday with the concerned officials from the government, whether the Ministry of Finance or the Central Bank of Egypt, and that the work will continue for two weeks.
