Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri has asserted Egypt’s firm position on the issue of Ethiopia’s dam, stressing that it is based upon the necessity of achieving a legally-binding agreement on filling and operating the dam. Such an agreement, he added, should realise the interests of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia and take into account the concerns of the two downstream countries.
The foreign minister’s remarks came during a phone conversation with his Vietnamese counterpart , Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez said. Minister Shoukri is currently visiting New York to take part in a planned UN Security Council session on the Ethiopian dam issue.
In the course of the call, Minister Shoukri expressed Egypt’s aspiration that Vietnam, a current member of the UN Security Council, would understand these concerns as it is also a downstream country, Spokesman Hafez added.
