Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad headed for the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to participate in the 19th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN).
The minister pointed out that the conference aims to enhance African ministerial environmental cooperation and support sustainable development in the continent.
The ordinary session of AMCEN is held from 14 to 18 August at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, while the session consists of a meeting of the expert group from 14 to 16 August, and a ministerial get-together on 17 and 18 August.
The session is held under the theme of “Seizing opportunities and enhancing collaboration to address environmental challenges in Africa.”
The minister is set to hold a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the conference to discuss issues related to the challenges facing Africa.
AMCEN was established in December 1985, following a conference of African ministers of environment held in Cairo, Egypt. Its mandate is to provide advocacy for environmental protection in Africa; to ensure that basic human needs are met adequately and in a sustainable manner; to ensure that social and economic development is realized at all levels; and to ensure that agricultural activities and practices meet the food security needs of the region.
