Egyptian Minister of Environment Yassmin Fouad participated on Thursday in a virtual meeting via video conference with Chairperson of Elders Group Mary Robinson.
The meeting tackled the ongoing preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), due in Sharm el Sheikh in November, especially those related to increasing the funding for adaptation with climate changes and the agreement on the losses resulting from these changes and the priorities of the African countries during this summit.
Fouad asserted that these points will be tackled on a specific day during the event.
Increasing and obtaining the finance should be linked in order to benefit from it in facing climate change, especially as there are several countries suffering from changes such as fires, high temperature, floods, torrential rain and drought, she said.
Meanwhile, Robinson asserted the importance of increasing the finance of adaptation in the countries suffering from climate change.
The Elders is an international non-governmental organization of public figures noted as senior statesmen, peace activists and human rights advocates, who were brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007. They describe themselves as “independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights”. The goal Mandela set for The Elders was to use their “almost 1,000 years of collective experience” to work on solutions for seemingly insurmountable problems such as climate change, HIV/AIDS, and poverty, as well as to “use their political independence to help resolve some of the world’s most intractable conflicts.
