Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem and Chitose Noguchi, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative in Egypt, discussedon Sunday expanding co-operation in renewable energy, green transition, and industrial development.
The discussions were attended by senior officials from the ministry, and focused on projects that support sustainable industry, digital transformation, and SME financing.
Hashem highlighted the “Sun of Industry” initiative, which aims to install solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 MW in factories within two years. This project is designed to improve energy resilience and reduce reliance on traditional power sources. He also stressed the importance of preparing industrial and energy maps to ease pressure on the national grid and promote the use of solar energy.
The co-operation with UNDP covers building local capacity for solar plant installation, transferring advanced technologies such as AI and automation, and improving product quality, inister noted.
These efforts will help Egyptian factories meet EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism requirements and increase exports.
The UNDP’s Noguchi laudedd Egypt’s solar initiative and confirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting clean energy in industry. She announced plans to expand co-operation through the SETI program, which will attract private investment for solar plants totaling 200 MW, reinforcing Egypt’s shift toward sustainable energy.
