Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty emphasised the vital importance of strengthening the African Union’s financial resources and developing self-financing mechanisms to reduce reliance on external partners, thereby bolstering the autonomy of African decision-making and ensuring sustainable funding for peace and security operations.
The minister expressed this attitude as he met on Sunday African Union High Representative for the Peace Fund and Financing of the Union Donald Kaberuka.
During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty stressed the necessity of advancing structural reforms within the African Union Commission to streamline its organs, eliminate duplicate mandates, and direct resources toward core African priorities.
The minister further expressed hope that the upcoming extraordinary session of the African Union Executive Council, scheduled to convene in Accra this November, will yield concrete steps to strengthen financial discipline, governance, and long-term sustainability across the union, the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Nader Zaki said in a statement.
He added that the bilateral discussions reviewed ongoing preparations for the joint session of foreign and finance ministers in Accra, focusing on strategies to enhance the African Union’s overall financial framework.
