Egypt’s Environment Minister Yassmin Fouad said on Thursday Egypt is taking strong strides on the road of climate change out of its convocation in the importance of this file, citing the establishment of the National Council for Climate Change and preparing the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050 that linked climate change to sustainable economic growth.

The minister made the remarks during her participation in a seminar to prepare for celebrations of the World Environment Day. The seminar is organized by Egyptian Syndicate Of Engineers in cooperation with Federation of Arab Engineers.

Fouad said the adaptation file is among the priorities of the Egyptian State in the sectors of agriculture, water resources, health and coastal areas, adding that a national plan for adaptation is being drafted at the time being.

Introducing the climate change governance system is one of the most important steps taken by the state to define roles and responsibilities, and prepare national plans with clear objectives, she said.

These plans include the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) Plan for emission reduction, which aims to achieve 42% renewable energy in the national energy mix by 2030.

She highlighted two important areas that the Ministry of Environment is working on with relevant authorities; the weather forecasting and early warning file, which includes efforts to develop an interactive climate change map using approved mathematical models and historical data from the Meteorological Authority and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation to predict the effects of climate change on different regions in Egypt.

Additionally, efforts are being made to prepare financing packages in coordination with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development to attract diverse funding sources for various projects, she added.
