Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has secured the release of Egyptian doctor Peter Samaan Marzouk, who had been detained in the Maldives, and facilitated his return to Egypt, a statement released by the Ministry said on Tuesday.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty directed the Egyptian Embassy in Sri Lanka, which has non-resident diplomatic representation in the Maldives, to urgently contact Maldivian authorities to secure the citizen’s release and provide him with the necessary consular assistance.
The ministry’s Consular Sector also maintained regular contact with his family to update them on developments and efforts to resolve the case and arrange his return.
In this regard, Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs and Egyptians Abroad, Ambassador Haddad Abdel Tawab El-Gohary, held intensive contacts with the director of the Consular Department at the Maldivian Foreign Ministry.
He stressed the importance of ensuring the citizen was treated properly and that his case was resolved and he was released as soon as possible.
The efforts resulted in the Maldivian authorities agreeing to release him, in a move reflecting the friendly and cooperative relations between Egypt and the Maldives.
Following his return, El-Gohary received Marzouk and his family at the Foreign Ministry.
The family expressed its appreciation for the ministry and relevant authorities for their efforts to resolve the case and ensure his safe return.
The Ministry urged Egyptians travelling abroad to comply with the laws and regulations of the countries they visit and follow instructions issued by relevant authorities and airport security officers.
It also called on citizens facing any legal problem or detention abroad to immediately contact the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.
