Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s commitment to strengthening co-operation with Iraq, particularly in trade, investment and economic development, during talks with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Baghdad on Saturday.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers.

Abdelatty said he looked forward to the anticipated visit of the Iraqi prime minister to Cairo on November 23, which is expected to provide fresh impetus to bilateral relations.

He also stressed the need to accelerate co-ordination under the trilateral co-operation mechanism involving Egypt, Iraq and Jordan and advance priority joint projects, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nader Zaki said.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s firm support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability.

The two ministers discussed regional developments, particularly the situation in the Gaza Strip and efforts to implement US President Donald Trump’s peace plan. They underscored the importance of closer consultation and co-ordination and prioritising political and diplomatic solutions to regional crises to promote security and stability.

Abdelatty also discussed ways to expand bilateral co-operation with Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to boosting ties with the Maldives and building on the outcomes of the former Maldivian foreign minister’s visit to Egypt in October 2025.

He called for activating a memorandum of understanding on political consultations and preparing for a new round of talks. He also welcomed the establishment of an Egyptian-Maldivian parliamentary friendship association.

The two ministers explored opportunities to expand co-operation in agriculture, tourism, education and healthcare.

Abdelatty also praised Al-Azhar’s mission in the Maldives for its role in teaching Arabic and Islamic sciences and promoting moderate Islamic thought.

Cairo, Tunis pledge to enhance economic co-operation

Abdelatty met Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mohamed Ali Nafti in Baghdad on Saturday to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments.

Both ministers stressed the importance of strengthening economic, trade and investment ties and following up on the outcomes of the 18th session of the Egyptian-Tunisian Joint Higher Committee to advance bilateral relations and serve the shared interests of both countries, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nader Zaki said.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments, particularly in the Gaza Strip, Libya and Sudan.

They emphasised the need to intensify consultation and co-ordination to address regional challenges, support efforts to resolve ongoing crises, promote security and stability, and safeguard the unity and sovereignty of Arab states.
