The Cabinet’s media centre has said that Egypt managed to progressively reduce unemployment rates in spite of global economic fluctuations.

The State set up a national programme to counter unemployment, taking into account the social and economic dimensions, the centre said in a report on Monday.

The report recorded the unemployment rate in the first quarter (Q1) of 2004 to 2023, stating that the unemployment rate registered 7.1 per cent in Q1 of 2023, compared to 7.2 per cent in 2022, 7.4 per cent in 2021, 7.7 per cent in 2020, 8.1 per cent in 2019, 10.6 per cent in 2018, 12 per cent in 2017, 12.7 per cent in 2016, 12.8 per cent in 2015, and 13.4 per cent in 2014, which is the highest unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate reached 13.2 per cent in Q1 of 2013, 12.6 per cent in 2012, 11.9 per cent in 2011, 9.1 per cent in 2010, and 9.4 per cent in 2009, 9 per cent in 2008, 8.9 per cent in 2007, 11.8 per cent in 2006, 10.1 per cent in 2005, and 10.4 per cent in 2004, according to the report.

The number of the employees increased by 18.8 per cent, to register 28.4 million in Q1 of 2023, compared to 23.9 million in 2014, the report said.

The number of unemployed (jobless) persons decreased by 40.5 per cent to reach 2.2 million in Q1 of 2023, compared to 3.7 million persons in Q1 of 2014, it added.
