GEM uses animation to protect heritage 11 - Egyptian Gazette

Visitors to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) now have a new way to learn as they explore its galleries.

A new animated film turns a museum visit into a lesson on how everyone can help protect the past.

The film follows a group of visitors from planning their trip to exploring the museum’s galleries and public spaces. Along the way, it highlights everyday ways to help protect artefacts and make the visit better for everyone.

The work encourages visitors to respect displays and fellow guests, wait their turn, move safely, keep the museum clean and speak quietly. It also advises against using flash photography.

It is part of the museum’s “Guardians of History” campaign, launched in February to promote respectful visits and encourage the preservation of heritage.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said protecting heritage involves more than conservation and restoration.

It also depends on visitors understanding the importance of respecting museums, archaeological sites, and their collections, he said.

He added creative and modern media could help bring that message to children and young people, strengthening their connection to the country’s past.

GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim said the film aimed to present visitor etiquette through relatable situations rather than simply listing rules.

Each visitor, he said, had a role in safeguarding heritage for future generations.

The film was created by Egyptian film producer Hisham Soliman who said the animation was designed to combine entertainment with public awareness and appeal across generations.

It is due to be released on the museum’s digital platforms and social media accounts. The campaign also includes information materials, signs and educational programmes at the museum, developed with partner organisations.
