Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri asserted the responsibility of the Israeli government in de-escalating the situation in Jerusalem and not allowing it to go out of control.

The foreign minister’s remarks came during a phone call with UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.

During the meeting, the minister also highlighted the extensive contacts Egypt is conducting and asserted its rejection of the Israeli practices against the worshipers. He, meanwhile, referred to the Arab moves and preparation for the ministerial meeting of the Arab League Council tomorrow.

The UN envoy said that he is in contact with the Israeli side to contain the situation in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque as well as allow worshipers to freely practice their religious rituals in the mosque during these blessed days.

On the other hand, Shoukri held a meeting at the ministry’s headquarters with Ambassador Tarek Tayel, head of Egypt’s mission in Ramallah, who briefed the foreign minister on the latest developments in Jerusalem, whether related to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the events of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Minister Shoukri stressed that Egypt would continue to make efforts to put an end to these developments quickly.
