Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir stressed on Friday the importance of strengthening Egypt’s co-operation with Hungary across various transport sectors, particularly railways, through the exchange of expertise and advanced technologies to modernise railway systems and improve passenger services.

During his visit to Hungary, Wazir met with Hungarian Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy, expressing appreciation for the strong bilateral relations and reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to expanding co-operation and technical coordination between the two countries.

Wazir highlighted the importance of benefiting from Hungarian expertise and advanced technologies to improve railway operational efficiency and enhance the quality of services provided to passengers.

For his part, Vitézy expressed his country’s keenness to expand co-operation with Egypt, particularly in the railway sector, and continue joint projects and the exchange of technical and technological expertise in support of mutual interests.

The two ministers discussed prospects for expanding co-operation across various transport sectors, with particular focus on railways, and reviewed progress on joint projects, foremost among them the supply of passenger railcars to the Egyptian National Railways (ENR).

They agreed to proceed with the delivery of 44 new passenger railcars being manufactured in Hungary.

The order comprises four air-conditioned first-class coaches, six buffet cars and 34 air-conditioned second-class coaches.

Deliveries will follow an agreed timetable, supporting the modernisation of Egypt’s railway fleet and improving services for passengers.

Wazir outlined Egypt’s comprehensive railway modernisation plan, which includes renewing rolling stock, upgrading infrastructure and signaling systems, developing maintenance workshops and expanding domestic manufacturing of railway vehicles.

He also stressed the importance of partnerships with specialised international companies to facilitate technology transfer and strengthen local technical capabilities, highlighting the potential to benefit from Hungary’s experience in railway coach manufacturing and maintenance.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination and expanding bilateral co-operation, while exploring new opportunities for partnerships across the transport sector to strengthen relations and advance the shared interests of Egypt and Hungary.
