Egypt and Russia have agreed to expand co-operation in electricity, technology transfer and localising industry, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat said.

The minister made the remarks during a visit to Renera, a subsidiary of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit and Russia-Africa Economic Forum.

Esmat met with the company’s management, headed by CEO Anastasia Mikhailova, to discuss lithium-ion cell and energy storage battery production, their applications in data centres and major industrial facilities, and prospects for transferring technology to Egypt.

He toured the factory, which has an automation rate of 95 per cent and an annual production capacity of 18 million battery cells, equivalent to 50,000 batteries. Its products serve electric cars, buses, trams, river vessels and other transport, as well as backup power systems for industrial facilities, data centres and hospitals.

Esmat said Egypt maintains regular contact with Russian partners to explore co-operation in supplying energy storage systems, transferring technology and localising production.

He stressed that expanding solar and wind power under Egypt’s National Energy Strategy requires greater reliance on battery storage to ensure grid security and a reliable electricity supply.

He added that partnerships with the private sector to transfer technology and localise manufacturing are central to Egypt’s efforts to become a regional hub for renewable energy equipment production, boost domestic manufacturing and strengthen its industrial and technological capabilities.
