The Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), Hassan Abdalla, has reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to implementing the Greening Financial Systems (GFS) technical assistance programme in the coming period.
Having joined the initiative in July 2025, the CBE and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are working towards signing a joint co-operation agreement that includes provisions for technical capacity-building.
Abdalla made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with EIB Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti, who is visiting Egypt to discuss prospects for co-operation, future partnership plans and issues of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Abdalla welcomed Vigliotti and underscored the strategic partnership between the CBE and the EIB, the lending arm of the European Union.
He also outlined recent developments in the Egyptian economy and highlighted the soundness of the country’s banking sector, noting positive progress despite unprecedented global and regional challenges.
For her part, Vigliotti commended the resilience of Egypt’s banking sector, pointing to strong capital adequacy and liquidity ratios, as well as a low ratio of non-performing loans.
She also praised the fruitful co-operation between the EIB and Egypt and acknowledged the CBE’s efforts to support and advance the national economy.
The meeting further highlighted both institutions’ shared commitment to strengthening their partnership in sustainability, particularly by advancing sustainable finance initiatives and enhancing technical capabilities to support the transition towards greener financial systems in Egypt.
