Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said on Friday that mobilising resources is a state priority, with Egypt targeting a reduction in public debt to less than 70 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) by June 2030.
Speaking at a session titled “Cash Resources and Debt Management” on the fourth day of Egypt Forum 2026, Kouchouk said the target would be achieved by broadening the tax base and increasing tax and non-tax revenues without imposing additional burdens.
The plan also involves maximising returns from state assets and the profits of state-owned companies and authorities, creating greater fiscal space for spending on human development and social protection and supporting the economy, he added.
Kouchouk also said that Egypt had reduced the external debt of budget-sector entities by about $6 billion over the past three years, stressing that the country had repaid more debt than it had incurred during that period.
The government is working to establish flexible ceilings and future targets for external debt management to ensure its sustainability and improve its indicators, while increasing foreign currency resources, he added.
