The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has commended Egypt’s efforts to strengthen social health protection and expand universal health coverage through institutional capacity-building and closer co-operation among national bodies responsible for implementing the Universal Health Insurance System.
The recognition follows a capacity-building programme organised by the ILO in partnership with the Universal Health Insurance Authority in July 2026 under the European Union-funded “EU for a Decent Life” project.
The programme brought together officials and experts from a range of national institutions to exchange international expertise and enhance capacities in health financing, governance, digital transformation and the expansion of insurance coverage, including for workers in the informal economy.
Anne Kofoed, Head of the Migration Governance Team at the EU Delegation to Egypt, said that supporting health and social protection reforms is a key pillar of the strategic and comprehensive partnership between the EU and Egypt.
She added that investing in stronger institutions and ensuring access to healthcare for all contributes to the development of Egypt’s human capital and supports long-term prosperity.
Peter Mollema, the Netherlands’ Ambassador to Egypt, also highlighted the importance of supporting health and social protection reforms in the country.
He reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to working with Egypt and UN partners to expand health coverage to workers in the informal economy, as well as refugees and migrants, helping to build a more inclusive and resilient society and economy.
