September 7, 1956 – A technician inspects a model of the new Fairey Rotodyne jet-propelled helicopter, dubbed the “Rotorcoach” for its 40 to 44 passenger seating capacity. Claimed to be the most advanced helicopter in the world, the aircraft will be powered by two Napier Eland propeller turbines featuring auxiliary jets on the rotor blade tips. It is designed to achieve a cruising speed of over 150 m.p.h. and a range of approximately 250 miles. An advanced-stage prototype is visible in the background.
