Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdel Aaty met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi on Thursday at the agency’s headquarters in Vienna.
Minister Abdel Aaty expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the IAEA, noting Grossi’s participation in the ceremony marking the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the second unit of Egypt’s Dabaa nuclear power plant. He emphasised the importance of the agency’s technical support under its cooperation programme, which underpins Egypt’s peaceful nuclear programme through assistance to Dabaa, research reactors, capacity building, and institutional development.
The two sides also exchanged views on the escalating situation in the Middle East. Minister Abdel Aaty outlined Egypt’s intensive diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and stressed the need for political and diplomatic solutions as the sole path to resolving crises. He warned against steps that could fuel conflict, citing risks to regional stability, global trade, supply chains, and energy markets.
For his part, Grossi praised Egypt’s progress in implementing the Dabaa project, calling it one of Africa’s most significant peaceful nuclear energy initiatives. He also commended Egypt’s role in promoting regional stability and supporting diplomatic solutions to ongoing conflicts.
