Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli witnessed on Wednesday the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the country’s first wind turbine manufacturing plant and develop a 2,000-megawatt wind power project in the Gulf of Suez region.

The agreement was signed between China’s SANY Renewable Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

The project is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to localize advanced technologies, increase local content in renewable energy projects, and strengthen the domestic manufacturing base for electrical equipment.

Under the deal, the new factory will produce wind turbines with an annual capacity of 2 gigawatts and is expected to be completed within two years.

The facility will supply equipment for local wind energy projects while also targeting export markets across Africa and the Middle East.

The MoU also includes the development of a 2,000MW wind farm, to be financed and implemented in local currency. The project is expected to be connected to Egypt’s national electricity grid within 23 months of the final agreements being signed.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Madbouli highlighted the importance of renewable energy projects in diversifying Egypt’s energy mix and supporting the country’s green transition.

He noted that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi closely follows developments in the sector.

Minister of  Electricity Mahmoud Esmat said localizing the production of renewable energy equipment would support Egypt’s goal of expanding solar and wind projects while increasing the use of locally manufactured components.
