The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities posted on Thursday to its social media platforms a short video about tourist attractions in the southern Governorate of Assiut.

The video, which details the wonderful sites Egyptians and foreigners can visit in Assiut, is part of a major tourism promotion campaign by the ministry.

The campaign throws light on must-visit sites in the different governorates around Egypt.

This time, the ministry is focusing on Assiut, which is located around 400 kilometres south of Egyptian capital Cairo.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities launched the campaign on September 1.

It will last for 27 days, each of which will focus on one of the nation’s governorates.

It comes in commemoration of the World Tourism Day, which is marked on September 27 everywhere around the world.

Assiut is one of the oldest governorates in Egypt. It overlooks the River Nile and boasts a large number of ancient and tourist sites, including the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary where the Holy Family spent days before it headed back to Palestine.

Assiut is also home to al-Hamameyah Village which contains a large number of cemeteries dating back to prehistoric and pharaonic times.
