Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Sunday received phone calls from Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, and Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanke Bruins Slot.

The talks were part of the ongoing consultations that Egypt is conducting to stop the escalation between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a statement.

Shoukry’s contacts with his counterparts focused on assessing the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip and its surroundings and between the Palestinian and Israeli sides on various fronts, as well as steps required of concerted regional and international efforts to urge the sides to give priority to the path of calm and self-restraint and to move away from the spiral of violence to spare innocent civilians from the consequences, he added.

Egypt is committed to continue efforts to achieve calm and an immediate cessation of escalation in the Gaza Strip and other regions, Shoukry said, calling for concerted efforts of all international actors to achieve the goal as a priority at the current stage.

The top diplomat also stressed the importance of dealing with the Palestinian issue from a comprehensive perspective that addresses the roots of the crisis, ensures the preservation of legitimate Palestinian rights, and establishment of a Palestinian state within the June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
