Ambassador of Japan Oka Hiroshi and his spouse inaugurated two Japanese grassroots grant assistance (Kusanone) projects in Old Cairo.

The Kusanone scheme is a non-repayable financial assistance to non-governmental organisations, hospitals, primary schools, research institutes and other non-commercial organisations to provide support for the realisation of their development projects.

The first project is for empowerment and employment support for 100 women in Old Cairo, implemented by Gozour Foundation for Development in the grant amount of US$83,708.

The second is for enhancing the physical and educational environment for the hearing impaired children in El-Malek El-Saleh, implemented by Nardin Association for Social Services in the grant amount of US$89,633.

During the ceremony, Archbishop Dr. Samy Shehata, Chairman of Nardin Association and other speakers expressed their sincere appreciation to Japan’s assistance to support hearing impaired children in El-Malek El-Saleh.

Ambassador Oka emphasised the importance of human security, which is the basic principle of the SDGs that “no one is left behind” to protect and empower vulnerable people by focusing on each individual.

Since 1994, Japan has provided about US$10 million to Egypt, supporting 176 projects in a wide range of sectors including education, health, water and sanitation, vocational training, women empowerment and special needs support.
