TUNIS – Tunisian President Kais Saied on Wednesday chaired a meeting with the members of the Army Supreme Council and the senior security leaderships at the Carthage Palace.
On Sunday evening, the Tunisian president decided to relieve Prime Minister Hicham Mechichi from his post, freeze all activities of the Parliament and lift the immunity of all MPs.
“The first decision I should have taken months ago regards the parliament is to suspend all its activities,” the president said.
The Tunisian president added that he would assume executive authority with the assistance of a new prime minister.
Saied’s decision came in the wake of violent protests witnessed in many Tunisian cities.
