Israel launched a strike on the historic southern Lebanese port city of Tyre on Tuesday, killing at least eight people, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The attack came shortly after Israel issued its first-ever evacuation order for the entire city.
The casualties resulted from a single strike on Tyre’s eastern outskirts, the health ministry and state media reported. It was among the deadliest Israeli attacks on the city since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began on March 2.
Rescue teams were still combing through the debris in search of survivors, the ministry said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military released an online evacuation notice covering all of Tyre, including the northwestern Christian district, where many residents displaced from other parts of the city had sought refuge and which had previously been excluded from such directives.
