A 10-year-old boy died after falling into a dry borehole in northwestern Algeria, civil protection authorities said on Saturday, ending a four-day rescue operation.
The boy, identified as Ayoub, fell into the well in the village of Raghna, in Ghassoul municipality in El Bayadh province, authorities said. His body was located and recovered from the site.
“The child was found and brought out dead,” Algeria’s Civil Protection said in a statement.
The agency said it had mobilized personnel and equipment alongside local authorities, other institutions and private individuals to support the rescue effort.
The borehole was about 80 metres deep and only around 40 centimetres wide, making the operation to reach the child particularly difficult.
