Judo legend Teddy Riner is set to make his first-ever visit to Egypt. The French Olympic champion will headline the ‘Yalla Sahel’ initiative, which runs from July 29 to August 1. His visit reflects the growing role of sport as a catalyst for tourism.

Riner’s visit is about more than one sporting legend. It highlights the increasing role of sport in promoting tourism and attracting international attention. His presence brings global prestige to one of Egypt’s biggest summer sporting events. It also puts the North Coast in the spotlight as a destination for sport and entertainment.

The ‘Yalla Sahel’ initiative will feature a packed programme of sport and entertainment throughout the summer. It aims to strengthen the North Coast’s reputation as a leading leisure destination. The initiative also boosts Egypt’s position as a growing hub for sports tourism and major international events across the region.

The initiative is held under the patronage of the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (New Capital). It is organised in partnership with United Sports Company and the Egyptian Judo Federation.

Redefining greatness

Few athletes have dominated their sport like Teddy Riner. The Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the greatest judoka of all time.

His record speaks for itself. Riner has won 12 World Championship gold medals. They include nine heavyweight titles, two open-weight crowns and one team world title with France. He is the first judoka in history to reach that remarkable milestone.

His Olympic record is also extraordinary. Riner won heavyweight Olympic gold at London 2012, Rio 2016 and Paris 2024. He also helped France claim mixed team gold at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

Record breaker

Beyond his World and Olympic triumphs, Riner’s trophy cabinet features five European titles, four World Masters crowns and 11 Grand Slam victories.

Between October 2010 and February 2020, he strung together an incredible 154 consecutive victories. The streak, one of the longest in individual sport, showcased a level of consistency and excellence rarely witnessed at the highest level of competition.

Beyond sport

Riner’s first visit brings international prestige to the ‘Yalla Sahel’ initiative.

The event, organised through a partnership between United Sports Company and the Egyptian Judo Federation, highlights the role of sports events in boosting tourism and promoting Egypt’s North Coast as a leading summer destination for sports and entertainment, attracting world-famous athletes.
