CAIRO – Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi stressed his ministry’s support for all Egyptian athletes to compete in different sports.

Sobhi made the remarks while he was honouring Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif who won the Parma Ladies Open and become the first woman from Egypt to win a WTA Tour title.

“It means a lot for my country,” Sherif said after winning Egypt’s tennis star.

“It means a lot for the people back home, my family, all the hard work, all the mental struggles in the last weeks. I’m just thrilled and happy. This was never expected,” she added.

The 26-year-old advanced 25 positions in the list of the best 50 female tennis players around the world, taking the 49th place with 1,040 points.

The best ranking for Sherif in the list was the 45th place, achieved in July.
