PARIS — Egypt’s Mayar Sherif captured the Grand Est Open 88 singles title, clinching her second title of the season.
Sherif, ranked 109th in the world, defeated Belgium’s Jeline Vandromme, world No. 161, in a hard-fought three-set final, winning 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
The Egyptian staged a remarkable comeback in the second set after trailing 5-0 to claim her maiden Grand Est Open title.
During her title run, Sherif defeated France’s Leolia Jeanjean, ranked 132nd in the world, in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6, in the semifinals.
She advanced to the last four after beating Spain’s Alicia Herrero Linana 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, before overcoming France’s Amandine Hesse, ranked 401st, in the round of 16.
Sherif opened her campaign with a straight-sets victory over Morocco’s Yasmine Kabbaj, ranked 275th, 6-4, 6-2.
The tournament was held in France from July 5 to 12.
Sherif will next compete at the Iași Open in Romania, a WTA 250 event scheduled from July 12 to 19, where she will face Hungary’s Dalma Gálfi in the opening round.
