USS Saratoga sets sail for sea trials

August 25, 1956— The 60,000-ton American aircraft carrier USS Saratoga has successfully passed beneath the Brooklyn Bridge in New York as she puts out to sea for her initial shakedown cruise. To clear the historic structure, the vessel utilised specially designed radar masts that slant down onto the flight deck, enabling the world’s largest warship to navigate under major bridges across all principal US ports.
