SCA takes over operations as foreign employees quit

September 16, 1956 — The massive iron gates of the Suez Canal Company Headquarters in Port Said clanged shut at midnight on Friday as several foreign employees of the former Canal Company resigned. Following their departure, responsibility for keeping the canal operational fell to the Egyptian Canal Authority. The authority officially entered this “new phase” by successfully guiding 41 ships through the canal yesterday.
