Egypt’s Armed Forces have released a new episode of the documentary series “Hekayat Batal” (A Hero’s Story), recounting the life and sacrifice of soldier Abanoub Reda Ragheb, a tank driver remembered by his commanders for his courage, discipline and unwavering loyalty during Egypt’s counter-terrorism operations in North Sinai.

The episode, published on the official platforms of military spokesperson Brigadier General Staff Gharib Abdel Hafez, is part of an ongoing effort to preserve the stories of servicemen who gave their lives defending the nation.

Through testimonies from his commanders, the documentary portrays Abanoub as a soldier who consistently volunteered to help others and never hesitated to take on additional responsibilities. During Ramadan, he often chose to stand guard so fellow soldiers could break their fast, earning the respect of everyone in his unit.

Abanoub became known for his professionalism, bravery and mastery of his vehicle. His commanders trusted him completely, confident that he could manoeuvre through the most dangerous terrain while keeping his crew safe.

Before one operation, his battalion commander offered him the opportunity to return to western Egypt instead of remaining in Sinai.

His answer was immediate:

“No, sir. I will not leave my comrades in Sinai. I will stay with you until the end.”

On 19 September 2018, during a raid in the Al-Moqata’a area, Abanoub’s tank advanced into position to engage terrorist elements. As it moved forward, it struck an improvised explosive device hidden beneath the vehicle.

The explosion penetrated the tank, resulting in his martyrdom.

When fellow soldiers attempted to rescue him, they discovered that the driver’s hatch remained locked from the inside, confirming that he had remained at his post until the very last moment.

His comrades immediately engaged the terrorists responsible for the attack, killing several of them before leaving the battlefield.
