Egypt’s Armed Forces have released a new episode of the documentary series “Hekayat Batal” (A Hero’s Story), recounting the life and sacrifice of Captain Abdel Rahman Ali Mahmoud, an officer remembered by comrades for his discipline, humility and unwavering devotion to duty during Egypt’s counter-terrorism operations in North Sinai.

The episode, published on the official platforms of military spokesperson Brigadier General Staff Gharib Abdel Hafez, forms part of an ongoing effort to document the stories of servicemen who laid down their lives defending the country.

Through emotional testimonies from fellow officers and soldiers, the documentary portrays Abdel Rahman as a respected commander whose strong moral character earned the admiration of everyone around him.

Friends who knew him since their days at the Military Academy described him as a disciplined and hardworking officer who enjoyed the love and respect of commanders, non-commissioned officers and soldiers alike.

Those who served under him recalled how closely he interacted with his men, speaking to them not only about military duties but also about their personal concerns, while constantly reminding them of the importance and honour of their mission in Sinai.

According to comrades, one phrase was always on his lips:

“May God grant us a good ending and martyrdom.”

On 16 February 2019, Captain Abdel Rahman Ali Mahmoud was commanding Gouda 3 Outpost, which played a critical role in securing supply routes and preventing logistical support from reaching terrorist elements operating around Arish.

Fellow officers recalled that he had carefully prepared his men for every possible scenario, ensuring that each soldier knew his position and responsibilities in the event of an attack.

At the time, he was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first child, a daughter who had not yet been born.

Shortly before the attack, he told one of his friends that he hoped to return home briefly to witness the birth of his child before coming back to his unit.

When his colleague urged him to take care because conditions around the outpost were becoming increasingly dangerous, Abdel Rahman surprised him with his response.

“I hope it happens,” he said. “Praise be to God, there is no greater honour I could hope for.”

At around six o’clock on the morning of 16 February 2019, terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the outpost using hand grenades vehicles mounted with heavy machine guns, supported by snipers, rocket-propelled grenades and hand grenades.

The defenders immediately took up their positions and engaged the attackers.

According to surviving soldiers, fear never entered their hearts.

“We faced them head-on,” one soldier recalled. “Nobody ran. Nobody was afraid. The entire outpost echoed with cries of ‘Allahu Akbar’.”

Using their defensive positions and fortifications, the soldiers fought back fiercely.

Captain Abdel Rahman Ali Mahmoud led the battle from the front until he was martyred during the confrontation.

Six terrorists were killed in the fighting.

Months later, comrades visited his family and met the daughter he never had the chance to see.

“We told them that your daughter is our daughter,” one officer recalled. “She will never be alone.”
