Wintershall Dea is committed to producing reliable energy in the most efficient and responsible way. To underline this commitment, Sameh Sabry as Senior Vice President and Managing Director Wintershall Dea Egypt, signed a letter of intent with Dr Eng Magdy Galal in his capacity as Executive Managing Director of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), to significantly reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions at the Disouq concession.

Wintershall Dea Chief Executive Officer Mario Mehren says: “In Egypt, we are acting on emissions reduction goals. We have developed expertise in Germany, such as our methane Leak Detection and Repair Programme (LDAR) and we are now bringing this expertise to Egypt. To use it at our projects, working with our partners in support of Egypt’s own goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Work to reduce operational emissions at gas production projects goes hand in hand with work to identify low-carbon energy projects for the future. In July 2022, Wintershall Dea and EGAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly work on identifying possible CCS and hydrogen projects. Sabry says: “Our future in Egypt looks bright: we are producing the natural gas that Egypt needs today, while already looking into hydrogen and carbon management projects for tomorrow.” Dawn Summers, Chief Operating Officer of Wintershall Dea and responsible board member for Egypt, emphasises: “That is our path for a successful and secure energy transition. And we are delighted to be walking that path together with our Egyptian partners.”

Wintershall Dea has been a reliable partner for Egypt since 1974. The company’s business in Egypt transitioned from oil production in the Gulf of Suez to a natural gas focus today. For future projects, Wintershall Dea is looking into potential carbon management and hydrogen solutions.
