RAFAH — The US Chargé d’Affaires in Cairo, Robert Silverman, has praised Egypt’s significant humanitarian and relief efforts in support of civilians in the Gaza Strip, commending the country’s pivotal role in coordinating the delivery of aid and facilitating the work of international relief organisations.
The remarks were made during his visit on Monday to the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing, where he was accompanied by a high-level delegation from the US Embassy to review Egypt’s efforts in delivering humanitarian assistance and receiving injured Palestinians. The delegation was received by North Sinai Governor Khaled Megawer and Khaled Zayed, Chairman of the Egyptian Red Crescent branch in the governorate.
During the visit, Mr Silverman inspected humanitarian aid trucks in the main yard in front of the Rafah crossing, as well as Egyptian ambulances stationed at the gate on the Egyptian side. He was also briefed on the operational procedures of the crossing and its role amid the current conditions in Gaza.
The North Sinai governor briefed the delegation on developments in Gaza and Egypt’s ongoing efforts to support Palestinians, noting that 80 per cent of aid entering Gaza originates from Egyptian institutions and entities. He emphasised Egypt’s central role in promoting regional security and stability.
Governor Megawer reaffirmed that Egypt continues its efforts in support of peace and stability, based on its historical role and responsibility towards regional issues, particularly the Palestinian cause. He stressed that the Rafah crossing remains fully open on the Egyptian side for the movement of individuals and the reception of injured and sick Palestinians receiving treatment in Egyptian hospitals. He also noted that any closure of the crossing occurs from the Israeli side due to conditions in Gaza.
Mr Silverman stated that there is a strong partnership between the United States and Egypt based on mutual interests in peace and stability in the Middle East. The remarks were originally made during a reception hosted by the North Sinai governor upon the delegation’s arrival at El-Arish International Airport earlier in the day.
