A British town crier has been named the world’s loudest woman after recording a shout of 105.9 decibels, Guinness World Records said.
Brenda Willison shouted “oyez” during an official attempt on September 9, earning the records for the loudest female town crier and the loudest individual female shout, UPI reported.
“Oyez”, traditionally used by town criers to attract attention, means “hear ye” and comes from Anglo-Norman or Old French.
Willison, who said she did not believe the attempt represented her loudest possible shout, became Peterborough’s town crier in 1987.
She told Guinness World Records that her daughter had entered her for the role after seeing an advertisement in a local newspaper.
Her daughter wrote that if Willison stood outside one of the two cafés she managed at a country park and shouted “chips”, she could be heard at the other, one and a half miles away.
