Sohag International Airport is finalizing preparations to resume flight operations this Sunday, following the completion of a comprehensive development and efficiency-enhancing project. The upgrades have modernized the airport’s technical and service infrastructure to meet the latest international systems and standards.
Dr. Sameh El-Hefny, Minister of Civil Aviation, emphasized that the Sohag International Airport development project is a key component of the state’s broader strategy to modernize Egypt’s airport network. He noted that the upgrades aim to boost operational efficiency, ensure the highest standards of safety and quality, and increase the capacity to accommodate the growing surge in air traffic. El-Hefny further highlighted that airports in Upper Egypt receive special priority within the state’s vision for achieving balanced regional development.
The Minister added that the airport’s modernization reflects the Ministry’s commitment to empowering the facility to fulfill its economic and developmental role. By strengthening air connectivity, the airport will facilitate both domestic and international travel, thereby supporting the investment climate in Sohag and neighboring governorates.

Pilot Wael El-Nashar, Chairman of the Egyptian Airports Company, stated that the reopening is part of an integrated development program targeting the efficiency of the Egyptian airport system, with a specific focus on regional hubs. He confirmed that the renovation work was executed according to a strict timeline and under rigorous supervision to ensure all facilities were fully operational before the resumption of service.
The temporary suspension of flights allowed for extensive upgrades to the airfield. These works included the complete rehabilitation and efficiency-boosting of the airside facilities, the development of the tarmac, and the repaving of the primary and two secondary runways to ensure operational safety in accordance with certified global standards.

The project also extended to the passenger terminals. Both departure and arrival halls were upgraded to enhance the traveler experience. Additionally, three VIP lounges were renovated, and restroom facilities throughout the airport were modernized.
To improve ground services, car parking areas were completely overhauled, including the installation of new lighting poles and directional signage. The toll booths at the main gate were also upgraded to streamline traffic flow and facilitate easier entry and exit for passengers and visitors.
Airlines are scheduled to begin operating flights from Sohag starting March 31, coinciding with the approved summer season schedule. This return to full capacity is expected to provide a significant boost to development and investment in the region.
Sohag International Airport has a capacity of 400 passengers per hour. It serves as a vital aerial gateway for the governorates of Sohag and Qena, playing a crucial role in facilitating movement and supporting economic activity in Upper Egypt.
