Sisi's participation in BRICS summit enhances interests of Global South: Analysts 10 - Egyptian Gazette

KAZAN – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s participation in the BRICS summit, that runs from Tuesday to Thursday in the Russian city of Kazan, will help enhance the development interests of the countries of the Global South, especially those of the African continent, analysts say.

They pointed out that Egypt – which joined BRICS early 2024 – can effectively express the needs of the African continent, especially in the areas of sustainable development and confronting the impacts of climate change.

The analysts said expanding the membership of the BRICS group aims to strengthen the voice of the developing countries of the Global South and create a multipolar world based on common interests, respect for national sovereignty, and the right of all countries to sustainable development.

Aryan Sharma, a senior Indian economic analyst said that BRICS countries, including Egypt and India, can play a pivotal role in enhancing emerging economies and reforming international financial institutions to support sustainable development efforts in developing countries.

Egypt played an important role in defending the interests of African countries affected by the repercussions of climate change, he said, adding it stressed the need to provide financial and technological assistance to African countries, which are the most suffering from the repercussions of climate change, despite being the least contributors to gas emissions globally.

For her part, Jana Mikhailov, an energy analyst in Russia, said Egypt can play an important role in promoting cooperation among BRICS member states, stressing the need for the countries of the bloc to share their successful development experiences and provide financing packages for poor countries.

She added that BRICS can adopt an effective strategy to confront energy crises and combat terrorism and cybercrime.

In the same context, John Kamalo, a banking expert from South Africa, said strengthening the economic and trade partnership among the BRICS countries could contribute to correcting the imbalance in the global financial system in light of the economic weight of the member states.

He stressed the need to complete the financial entities of the BRICS group to shore up development operations and combat poverty in developing countries.

BRICS currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that 34 countries had expressed interest in joining BRICS.
