Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit asserted that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has a great influence in recent key changes in Egypt.

Abul Gheit made the remarks late Wednesday in an interview with a programme on Sada El Balad.

He said Sisi resembles international historical figures, stressing that the Egyptian people should help and back Sisi in all the efforts he is exerting nationwide.

He added that cancelling the state of emergency in Egypt reflects confidence that the Egyptian community is safe and suffers no tension.

The AL chief talked about regional and Arab issues as well as the latest developments in Arab countries, topped by Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Lebanon and Iraq.

He also reviewed the role played by the pan-Arab organisation to realise regional stability.

As for Sudan, Abul Gheit expressed concerns about the situation in the country.

He urged people in Sudan to resort to dialogue and be patient for a better future.

Abul Gheit added that he is following the situation in Sudan, voicing hope that Sudan would get out of the current crisis.

Shifting to Libya, he said the international community is backing the holding of Libyan elections as scheduled and the withdrawal of foreign troops and mercenaries from Libya.

Speaking about Iraq, Abul Gheit said the country is capable of choosing a government which reflects the genuine will without any foreign meddling.

All must recognise the results of the Iraqi elections, he said, adding the AL mission did not detect any problems during the voting process in Iraq.

As for Tunisia, Abul Gheit said his latest visit to the country followed the reform measures taken by the Tunisian leader, who – he added – has a clear-cut vision and a roadmap in addition he is well aware of the situation nationwide.

In Lebanon, the domestic situation in the country is difficult, he said, voicing hope Lebanon will succeed in its domestic settlements and reach an understanding with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to keep the economic performance stable nationwide.

As for Syria, Abul Gheit said some Arab countries are now gradually adopting an open-door policy toward Syria.

Meanwhile, the AL chief said the upcoming Arab summit will convene in Algeria in March, referring to statements by the Algerian foreign minister on his country’s commitment to holding the Arab gathering and chairing it.

Concerning the role of the UN Security Council vis-a-vis the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Abul Gheit said a rapprochement should be reached among the main countries so that the Council can issue its resolution in this regard.

Shifting to the Palestinian file, Abul Gheit slammed the way the international community is dealing with the current Israeli government.

He voiced hope for a “healthy relation” which would restore rights to the Palestinians and establish a Palestinian State along the 1967 borders.

He also hoped the problem of refugees will be over.
