CAIRO – Secretary General of the Egyptian National Council for Persons with Disabilities Ashraf Marei said the State exerts great efforts to support persons with disabilities, adding that the rights of this group come on top of priorities of the State.
In statements to MENA on Friday on the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons, Marei noted that the State issued the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2018 to safeguard their rights, in addition to designating 2018 as the year of People with Disabilities (PWD).
All government and private agencies and civil society organizations pay attention to this category, which represents about 11 percent of the society, he added.
He further noted that his council participated in devising the National Strategy for Human Rights (2021-2026) that was launched by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on September 11.
As for means to advance the economic inclusion for PWD, Marei said the council organizes working sessions on small-sized enterprises and entrepreneurship.
In the coming period, the council will coordinate with the Manpower Ministry and several authorities on employment forums for PWD, he added.
In December 2019, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities was established by presidential decree no. 11 / 2019 to replace the National Council for Disability Affairs.
In October 1992, as the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons (1983–1992) drew to an end, December 3 was designated by the UN General Assembly as an annual International Day of Disabled Persons. The first day was marked on December 3, 1992.
