CAIRO – Egyptian Pime Minister Moustafa Madbouli greeted Minister of Interior Mahmoud Tawfiq on the occasion of Egyptian Police Day.
Egyptian Police Day commemorates the Battle of Ismailia where over 50 policemen were killed and dozens wounded when they refused British demands to hand over weapons and evacuate the Ismailia Police Station on 25 January 1952. The British Army surrounded the site, then brought tanks in and took over the station by force after a battle in which the Egyptian police heroes lost their lives and when news of the deadly confrontation was publicized the next day it sparked the Cairo fire and eventually led to the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. Egyptian Police Day has been a national holiday since 2009.
In a cable Wednesday, the prime minister
voiced his sincere regards and best wishes to the minister of interior and policemen on this historic occasion, during which the brave policemen set a wonderful example in carrying out their national duty.
Madbouli said: “We are always proud of efforts made by the police to preserve the security and stability of the nation and provide an ameliorate atmosphere meant to advance the process of economic and social development the country is witnessing in the various fields.”
He supplicated to God Almighty for continued success of police staffers in
preserving the country’s security and stability, wishing Egypt further progress and prosperity.
